Previously this could only be done with mouse clicks. There is a second aspect to the new lanes that composers can greatly benefit from – the addition of key commands to recall continuous (CC) data views in the midi editor. Of course DP has probably the largest set of key commands, and lanes can be managed with key commands. Version 9 fixes that with a very capable implementation of the automation lane concept.
While you could isolate automation types, it was still less than ideal. Previously all automation was displayed together for each track in a single lane. It certainly has for me.ġ – Automation Lanes: DP9 adds the ability to view, edit and manage automation data on track lanes within the Sequencer view. Digital Performer is a very powerful DAW, but in scoring for film, that is where DP really shines brighter than most others.

I started with DP8 and upgraded to 9, running on a Windows 8.1, i7 PC with 64G ram. For a current scoring project, I decided it was time to give DP a run in a real world project. To address a wide range of readers, I have divided this review into two sections to cover new features applicable for existing DP users, DP as a DAW in general for new potential users, and platform related differences for users considering a change between PC and Mac, in either direction.Īs a composer, I had considered DP for a few years, and spent some time with it, but have used another DAW for the most part. DP9 enhances Digital Performer’s capabilities. With version 8, DP finally added a Windows version. DP has had a strong following of composers as well as musicians and producers for many years, but exclusively for Mac. Digital Performer 9 is here and brings a lot to the table.
